Bad food for the brain (Part 2)

(Foreword: This is the continuation of our response to Chelzea of Montevista regarding on her query on foods that are bad for the brain.)

DEAR Chelzea of Montevista,

Alright, let's move on to the list.

3. Refined Carbohydrates

These are carbohydrates that are made with processed grains. Gosh, they may not be sweet and you might think that they are harmless. But, they can make your sugar rise up soooo fast. This is because the refining procedure gets the fiber and nutrition in your grains. It is just like eating sugar directly and this could lead to issues like memory problems and much higher chances of getting dementia later on. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that children who eat a lot of refined carbohydrates had lower score on nonverbal intelligence tests. Moreover, elderly people would double their chances of getting mental impairment and dementia if they are eating more than 58% of their daily calories in refined carbs, than those who is more into whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

4. Processed Foods

I always wonder before, why foods in the United States or the western diet are really good tasting compared to what we have here. Well, that's it -- they have all the sugar, fat and salt combined replacing all the needed nutrients, while, we have slow homemade cooking just relying on with the natural ingredients.

The problem with western diet is it could build so much fat around your vital organs. This is associated with damage to the brain tissue and potentially reduces the brain volume. It may also harm the barrier that protects the brain from noxious substances, the blood-brain barrier.

We run out of space again. So, let me again continue this next time. Until then again.
