THE creation of a Baguio Sports Commission is being eyed in a proposed ordinance filed at the City Council.

Introduced by Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan, Councilors Benny Bomogao and Lilia Farinas with SK president Levy Lloy Orcales, the proposed measure “Adopting a comprehensive sports development code of the city” is pusing for the creation of a commission to ensure effective implementation of various programs for sports in the city.

The proposed sports commission will be an independent, non-stock, non-political, non–sectarian, incorporated foundation.

Baguio Sports Commission (BSC) will be tasked for the development funded by the city government through training and regular active participation of athletes, coaches, and trainers in local, provincial, regional, national and international competitions.

BSC will also be tasked to promote local sports and assist in the building, upgrading, and contract management of sports facilities, advertising, conduct, promotion or sponsorship of tournaments, trainings, seminars, workshops summits, clinics and conferences.

The commission will also govern and regulate sports development and promote youth welfare in the city, including accreditation, registration, and supervision in the conduct of sports and youth-oriented activities and progress.

BSC will also oversee youth welfare, local sports associations, chapters, institutions, and the like, that are sports- and youth-related.

The ordinance adds all athletes, coaches, trainers and officiating officers shall not be allowed to represent the city or receive cash incentive from the same without first securing approval from the Baguio Sports Commission.

Under the proposed ordinance, the local sports associations will be responsible in submitting to the Baguio Sports Commission their official list of athletes, coaches and trainers for appropriate action by the Commission.

Further dialogs will be held in the succeeding months between sports stakeholders for the improvement of the proposed measure before they are finalized.
