Aguelo faces off Sonsona

TWO grizzled veterans clash on Wednesday night, Oct. 9, 2019, as Adones Aguelo faces former World Boxing Council (WBC) International Silver super featherweight king Eden Sonsona for the Philippine Boxing Federation lightweight belt in one of the double main features of “Battle of the Ring Gladiators III - Double Championships” at the Calbayog City Sports Center.

Aguelo hopes to end 2019 on a high note after splitting his four fights this year. The 31-year-old of Flores Boxing Gym is coming off a fifth round stoppage victory over unheralded Jimmy Borbon.

Sonsona, on the other hand, was once a very promising prospect but now has a career that’s on a limbo. The 30-year-old has lost his last four contests and hasn’t fought for close to a year since losing to Jaime Barcelona by unanimous decision in 2018.

Aguelo is 32-20-2 with 22 knockouts, while Sonsona is 36-10-2 with 13 knockouts.

In the meantime, Justine Darap (7-1, 4 KOs) squares off with Robert Awitin (11-27-2, 9 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Federation Asia-Pacific super flyweight belt in the co-main event.

Darap was grounded after suffering his first career defeat in the hands of Enrique Magsalin in March. He bounced back with a fourth round knockout of Joey Antonio three months later.

Awitin is a gatekeeper that will test young prospects if they’re ready for the next level. He has faced the likes of Albert Pagara, Melvin Gumban and Larry Canillas early in their careers.

Undefeated Aussie up-and-comer Brad Morgan (6-0, 5 KOs) makes his ring return following a long hiatus in a six-round special attraction bout against patsy Elmer Colve (7-44-3, 3 KOs). (EKA)
