City Council pushes for dedicated motorcycle lane

THE Cebu City Council has urged the Cebu City Transportation Office to allocate the rightmost lane of the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) for motorcycle riders. The leftmost lane of the CSCR, more commonly known as “SRP,” will be allocated for fast moving vehicles.

The move followed a privilege speech by Councilor Joel Garganera, Tuesday, Oct. 15. 2019, which noted that vehicular accidents have become a “daily occurrence and the major ones usually happen at the SRP.”

“Most vehicular accidents are caused by over speeding, overtaking, reckless driving and violation of traffic laws; and every year, the number of people who are dying due to vehicular accidents is increasing,” said Garganera. The speech was adapted into a resolution and passed.

Just a day before Garganera took to the floor, a 26-year-old motorcycle driver from Naga City was killed at the SRP when he hit an upended vehicle.

Garganera said some irresponsible motorists overspeed, especially since the next traffic light from Plaza Independencia is still in Laray, Inayawan enroute to Talisay City or a good 10 kilometers away.

The city council urged traffic authorities to strictly implement the speed limit for all types of vehicles passing through SRP. (From PAC of SuperBalita Cebu, RSR)
