THE 42nd National Milo Marathon Davao Leg slated Sunday, October 20, which is nearing the 10,000 turnout of entries, may yet produce the next marathon kings the likes of the late Rafael Poliquit and Jeorge Andrade who dominated the annual footrace in recent years.

RunRio representative Abbie Aranda, in yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao, said, "Davao is the home of the champs like Andrade and Poliquit. We always look forward to the Davao leg. We are happy to be back."

Last 2017, she said, over 100 runners from the Davao leg qualified for the national finals. A 21K runner must hit the qualifying time of one hour and 15 minutes for a slot in the men's 42K national finals while the women's qualifying time is 1:35:00.

"Marami ang nagkaka-qualify from Davao kahit sa mga age-groups," Aranda said.

Davao leg organizer Kenneth Sai of Vantage Sports Promotions, however, confirmed to Sun.Star Davao yesterday that Digos City-based Andrade had qualified for the nationals via the General Santos City leg recently. But Arlan Arbois of Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) is the heavy favorite for the men's 21K title.

Meanwhile, the final security coordination meeting for the event is set today. "Hopefully the earthquake kagabi hindi makaapekto sa race natin," Sai said, adding that the run has 3K, 5K, 10K and 21 categories both for male and female divisions. The 21K has a total of 370 registrants, 10K with 500 runners and the 5K and 3K have about 9,000 participants.

Milo events regional coordinator Kirk Marion Mojica, for his part, bared that the Help Give Shoes advocacy program of the Milo run benefitted the Magallanes Elementary School (MES), Kapitan Tomas Elementary School, Sta.Ana Elementary School, Hizon Elementary School and Buhangin Elementary School. Three of these schools received 20 balls each while the other two each claimed 45 pair of shoes and 20 balls.

Nestle field sales manager Leilani Mañalac said the fun run has further helped boost the brand.

"Nestle really stays true in culturung and nurting generations of children through the marathon. We have a very strong advocacy in building champions in life," she said.

A cheerdance competition as well as a photo and media writing contest are among the side events.
