Solon: Are you happy with your sleep?

THIS is the second part of my series on better sleep. We discussed how important it is to sleep last week, and how sleep actually helps our health. A lot of people, nowadays ,do not get good sleep and are suffering because of that. Today, I want to write about how you can get better sleep.

1. Wake up at sunrise. This might be counter-intuitive for some but the best way to sleep sooner is to wake up sooner. Satchin Panda writes that our body is wired to wake up at sunrise.

2. Eat earlier. Eat at least two hours before bedtime. Our bodies cannot sufficiently relax when it is full and digesting.

3. Dim the lights. One problem we have with modern society is that there’s so much artificial light coming from establishments, our homes and our screens. Artificial light and blue light decreases our melatonin production and makes it more difficult for us to get deep meaningful and restful sleep.

4. No screens before sleeping. This may be the hardest thing to do, since we’re so “connected” nowadays. I personally make it a point to plug-off from social media and mobile phones after dinner.

Sleep is the way our body heals and rejuvenates itself. If you want to improve your health, start with your sleep.
