Nietes to grace Governor’s Cup slugfest

MURCIA-NATIVE, 4-division world champion, and the longest-reigning Filipino world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes (42-1-5, 23KOs) will grace this year’s Governor’s Cup Boxing Tournament - 1st Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson Open Boxing Provincial Championship today. The said Tournament will run until October 25 at the Murcia gymnasium.

The defending World Boxing Organization World Super Flyweight champion Nietes will inspire the hundreds of young potential fighters from various localities of Negros Occidental - who are seeing action in 22 weight divisions.

LGUs who confirmed their participation are Bacolod City, Escalante City, San Carlos City, Salvador Benedicto, Cadiz City, Sagay City, Manapla, Victorias City, Silay City, Talisay City, E.B. Magallona, Murcia, Bago City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Himamaylan City, Sipalay City, and Bayawan in Negros Oriental.

The weight categories are: Bracket A Kids 11-13 years old (born 2006) - cotton weight (26 kgs), kiddie weight (28 kgs), vacuum weight (30 kgs), ant weight (32 kgs), minimum weight (34 kgs) and powder weight (36 kgs); Bracket B School and Junior Boys 14-16 years old (born 2003) - light mosquito weight (38 kgs), mosquito weight (40 kgs), light paper weight (42 kgs), paper weight (44 kgs), light pin weight (46 kgs), pin weight (48 kgs), light flyweight (50 kgs), flyweight (52 kgs), and light bantamweight (54 kgs); and Bracket C - Youth Boys 17-18 years old (2001) - pin weight (48 kgs), light flyweight (50 kgs), flyweight (52 kgs), and light bantamweight (54 kgs), bantam weight (56 kgs), light welterweight (60 kgs) and welterweight (64 kgs).

Murcia Mayor Gerardo ‘Gerry’ Rojas will give his welcome address which will be followed by a message from Gov. Lacson.

To lead the oath of sportsmanship is Vicente Bullor, bronze medalist in the 2019 Palarong Pambansa in Davao City while national referee/judge Irving Antonio will lead the oath of officiating.

This boxing event aims to identify potential boxers to don the Negros Occidental colors in the national and international competitions.
