Mactan Rock vows to help small biz treat waste water

TO HELP small businesses comply with the Clean Water Act of 2004, water service provider Mactan Rock Industries Inc. (MRII) said it is willing to build a common waste water treatment facility, especially for small businesses.

This way more establishments, especially small players, will be able to comply with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) environmental laws, said MRII chairman Antonio Tompar.

“We are encouraged by the DENR to take care of the waste water of the clients, where we supply water,” said Tompar, adding that the directive also applies to large business establishments.

Tompar said a waste water facility will be built in Mactan Island following the DENR’s directive.

He added that building a shared waste water treatment facility will save small business establishments from incurring big costs of building one. He said they are ready to spend provided that establishments will also commit to have their waste water treated in the facility.

“As we comply with the directives of the DENR, we also hope that establishments would also do their part,” he said. “Water service providers are urged to not only install water facilities but also to collect waste water.”

Law

Section 8 of the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 or Republic Act 9275 states that the agency vested to provide water supply and sewerage facilities and concessionaires in Metro Manila and other highly urbanized cities, in coordination with local government units, are required to connect the existing sewage lines found in all subdivisions, condominiums, commercial centers, hotels, sports and recreational facilities, hospitals, market places, public buildings, industrial complexes and other similar establishments, including households to available sewerage systems.

The connection must be subject to sewerage services fees in accordance with existing laws, rules or regulations unless the sources have already utilized their own sewerage system, and all sources of sewage and septage have complied with the requirements. (KOC)
