DepEd Cebu to have new superintendent next week

WITH a new division schools superintendent, local government units (LGUs) in the province can expect the Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu to coordinate closely with them.

Lapu-Lapu City Schools Division Superintendent Marilyn Andales is set to replace Rhea Mar Angtud as Provincial Schools Division Superintendent effective Monday, Oct. 28, 2019.

Andales and DepEd 7 Director Salustiano Jimenez paid Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia a courtesy call on Monday, Oct. 21.

In an interview Tuesday, Oct. 22, Garcia said among the highlights of their discussion was the need to establish coordination between DepEd and the LGUs.

“I had only one request, that she be sure that she will coordinate with the mayors, especially if it involves the transfer of district supervisors and school heads. She promised to do that. After all, the DepEd needs the LGU in so many of their activities that ultimately reflects in the school system,” Garcia said.

On Aug. 23, the Provincial School Board (PSB) passed a resolution requesting the schools division office to conduct a consultation with the concerned local school board before appointing a district supervisor.

The move was in response to concerns raised by several mayors who were disheartened by the division office’s alleged lack of prior consultation before the appointment of its district supervisors.

In 2018, the League of Municipalities of the Philippines passed a unanimous resolution requesting the transfer of Angtud out of the province.

Last month, Angtud stepped down as co-chairperson of the PSB.

Andales assured the governor that a consultation with the local school board would be made before any change in the assignment of school heads and district supervisors is finalized.

“While serving Lapu-Lapu, I would always write to the mayor to ask for comment on the proposed movements in the assignments. I did this before we finalized everything,” Andales said in Cebuano. (RTF)
