Agency saves 35 from illegal recruitment

THE Inter Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) warns the public to avoid having their papers processed with unauthorized recruitment agencies so that they don’t become victims of illegal recruitment.

For the month of October, around 35 individuals were restrained at the MCIA by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) from working abroad.

They were turned over to the office of the BI and were instructed to return to their respective hometowns.

Individuals who couldn’t afford to return to their towns were handed over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) office.

Ligaya Abadesco of IACAT-MCIA said those individuals who were restrained at the airport could not provide any legal documents to the BI.

Most of them came from the Cebu, Bohol, Leyte and Olangapo, with flights bound for the Middle East and Macau.

The public was reminded to interact only with agencies that are accredited by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

“For now they are called deferred departure passengers. Their flights were deferred because it is unauthorized. Most of them had their transactions online and only had the first name or nicknames of the person that processed their papers,” said Abadesco.

Bogus recruitment agencies would mostly conduct their transactions online so they don’t have to pay to the POEA.

Most victims would prefer to transact with them because it is cheaper.

“These are fake. They don’t have any overseas employment contracts. Of course it is illegal. There is a great chance that they will be abused by their employers because they are not registered as OFW (overseas Filpino workers),” said Abadesco. (GCM of Superbalita Cebu, RSR)
