THE French Government recently gave a P100 million grant to the Cebu City Government for the construction of a wastewater treatment facility in the city.
The grant was channeled through Ecoglobal Foundation led by chairman John-Philippe Henry.
Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella signed in September 2019 the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Henry and Bealide Bedriddine of Syndicate Interdepartemental pour I’ Assainissement de I’ Agglomeration Parisienne (SIAAP).The MOA states that the City has to find a place for the construction of the wastewater treatment facility. SIAAP will finance the project through Ecoglobal Foundation.
SIAAP started the construction of a wastewater treatment facility in Urdaneta City in 2016; it was completed in 2019. This project prompted the Philippine Government, with the French Embassy’s blessing, to seek help from SIAAP so Cebu City can have the same facility.
Cebu City has no official sewage system that could store all the human waste from residential areas and business establishments.
“This is why the French Embassy and the Mayor of Cebu City have jointly requested backing from the SIAAP for the development of a wastewater treatment system and the creation of a centralized sanitation service to manage the operation of a such treatment plant,” read a portion of the MOA.
The MOA signatories aim that by 2030, Cebu City could have a clean environment. The wastewater treatment facility could also lessen water pollution. (From PAC of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
