AN APPEAL was made to stop selling mercury-laden products.

Baguio City Councilor Philan Weygan Allan sent the plea to store owners in the city in the wake of reports from the EcoWaste Coalition on continued proliferation of toxic cosmetics in local stores.

Allan said the law will prohibit and penalize the manufacture, importation, marketing and promotion, distribution and sale of cosmetics with mercury content in excess of 1 ppm.

The new law was filed by Vice - Mayor Faustino Olowan and is now on its way to its final reading and will then put fines ranging from P2,000 to P5,000 for violators caught with mercury-laden products.

“Konting panahon na lang, may batas na tayo, so I am appealing to please stop selling these products for the good of all of us,” Allan said.

Allan added she is holding on the successful public consultation made with store and mall owners on a pledge to stop the sale of toxic products as she urged all to continue to be vigilant of these health hazards.

Last week, the EcoWaste Coalition has alerted Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong of the continued sale of toxic cosmetics at outlets in the city.
