DPWH starts construction of traffic island along Araneta Street

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has started the construction of traffic island along Araneta Street in Barangay Tangub going to Barangay Sum-ag in Bacolod City.

Bacolod City Lone District Representative Greg Gasataya said Wednesday, October 23, 2019, DPWH has started the construction of the traffic island also called as center island last week for the safety of pedestrian and motorists travelling in the area.

“There have been a lot of requests last year if we could construct center island at Araneta Street in Barangay Tangub going to Barangay Sum-ag to avoid traffic accidents in the area,” Gasataya said.

He said several persons already died in the area due to traffic accidents making it a “killer highway.”

“It’s eight lanes so we need to put a center island for the safety of our pedestrians and motorists,” he added.

Gasataya earlier requested the DPWH to conduct a study and assessment for the construction of the center island in the highways of Barangays Tangub and Sum-ag.

It’s part of the DPWH’s construction to put up street lights and plants in the center island.

“We will improve these areas for the safety of our people here Bacolod,” Gasataya said.

Aside from the center island, he said they already started upgrading the city’s streetlights by installing solar-powered light emitting diode (LED) streetlights from the areas of Barangays Granada and Banago, and Circumferential Road going to Murcia.

“This is one of the programs that I promised to the people of Bacolod two years ago and we are hopeful that this year, we can install more solar streetlights to improve the lighting condition in various barangays,” he added.

Gasataya noted that solar-powered LED streetlights are environmentally-friendly and it could lessen the electric expenses of the city.

He said by next year, they will also install solar streetlights from the area of Circumferential Road going to the Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City.
