Cuenco: Halloween makeup idea: Dia de los muertos

LAST week, we featured a pretty, colorful unicorn makeup look as inspiration for Halloween. If going a little creepy is more your style, consider a “day of the dead” (dia de los muertos) sugar skull look, which you can achieve using makeup you probably already have in your stash so that you don’t need to spend a lot.

• White face paint is ideal for this look, but isn’t necessary. Choose your lightest foundation, or buy the palest or white cake makeup, available in most department stores’ beauty sections. Apply with a damp sponge and pat, don’t swipe, for the best coverage. To mattify and lighten further, layer a white face powder with the same damp sponge.

• Use black pencil or gel eyeliner to outline the eyes and whatever patterns you prefer for the forehead.

• Use a dark gray matte eyeshadow on cheekbones. Since this is a skull look, you do want the face to appear as bony as possible.

• To add some color, as the sugar skull isn’t all black and white, use any bold color you like around the eye socket. Try that teal shadow or purple eyeliner you never use. You can even use matte red lipstick applied with a brush.

• If you want to have a few flourishes or florals on the face but don’t have a steady or artistic hand, add temporary tattoos, which cost as little as P20 per sheet.
