Police: No jueteng in Baguio

THERE is no jueteng resurgence in Baguio City.

Police Colonel Allen Rae Co, director of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), said undocumented reports of a return of the illegal numbers game are not true.

“There is no resurgence of jueteng in the city, what we have is small town lottery [STL],” he said.

Co added that the fear of some might be confused with legitimate STL operations which is similar to the illegal numbers game where you choose two digits and wait for the winning combination to be drawn daily.

In 2017, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and the members of the BCPO discussed the start of operations of the government-approved game of chance awarding a lone operator from the city.

STL operations in the city was projected to remit a 10 percent share to local coffers with an expected P9.3 million income monthly.

Co said STL operators would be the first to suspect irregularities in their operations if the illegal games have ensued.

Councilor Philian Weygan-Allan earlier received reports of jueteng bets collected and drawn at the public market.

“We must show and tell, urging those who have information to speak up and help the anti-illegal gambling drive of the city,” the lady lawmaker said.

Allan added it was during one of the market visits and meetings that a concerned citizen approached her and showed her evidence of the return of the illegal numbers game which caused her to be alarmed.
