THE Ateneo De Davao University (Addu) Blue Knights and University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats men spikers are eyeing quarterfinals berths in the ongoing 2019 National University Games (Uni-Games) volleyball competition at the University of San Agustin (USA) Main Gym in Iloilo City.

Addu, toting a 2-2 win-loss record in bracket B, only needed to beat cellar dweller St. Louis College (SLC) yesterday to advance to the quarters.

Addu coach Kirk Marion Mojica, who is working together with his father Mario, said, they stand a good chance against SLC. “Wala pa kadaog maski isa sa among braket ang St. Louis. Six teams ang among bracket (SLC has not won any match yet in our group. Our bracket has six teams).”

The Blue Knights survived a 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22 win over Holy Angel University of Angeles City then cruised past Iloilo Doctors College (IDC), 25-19, 25-17, 25-15. But Addu bowed to Adamson University (AdU), 22-25, 16-25, 16-25, and succumbed to University of Eastern Philippines, 25-13, 25-27, 25-17, 23-25, 8-15.

The Jhonathan Vanta-mentored UM Wildcats, meanwhile, held a 3-1 card but still needed to beat University of San Agustin in bracket D eliminations as of Thursday to secure a quarterfinals berth.

USA, according to Vanta, has not yet won a match.

“Hopefully, dili lang gyud magkumpyansa... pero positive man mga bata. Pero kusog man gud among bracket (We can’t be complacent though. But the boys remain positive. Our group is composed of strong teams),” he said.

Last year, UM reached the quarterfinals.

UM spanked Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), 26-24, 25-15, 25-14, Wednesday afternoon after also beating University of St. La Salle of Bacolod City, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 16-25, 15-10, Tuesday.
