Khok: Horrified, enlightened

HAVE you brushed your artificial vampire fangs, polished your witch’s shoes and repaired the old flying broom?

You look Halloween-ready. I will not bother you with recipes and tips on making Halloween the scariest or the most delicious celebration ever this year. You know what to do.

This week has been a busy one for me. I shopped around the Internet for anything that would trigger my gray matter to get working.

Enlightened. I saw something that enlightened me. Plastic bags have a noble history.

It is a modern day horror object that clogs up waterways and sewage systems. Whales mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. Many a-news have I read about dead whales washing up on some shore. And the cause of death: Starvation due to undigested plastic bags.

Plastic bags make good Halloween monster. But in 1959, Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin thought of saving Mother Earth. He invented plastic bags, according to National Geographic, to save trees.

His idea was for man to reuse the bags but man being man, this did not happen. Why reuse it when man can always get more of it from where it came from? By 1979, 80 percent of Europe’s market had replaced paper bags with plastic ones. The US followed suit by the 1980s.

Since we have now been enlightened by the real purpose of plastic bags, let us give it back its dignity. Let us reuse this modern day monster and save trees.

Horrified. Food-themed items horrified me this week.

Actress and model Kim Kardasian recently received gifts on her 39th birthday, my niece Krystalle said: Lemon, hot dog, glass, bag and paper. The value to these items horrified me because something I consider trivial could support my food supply, painting endeavors, rental and traveling haunts for years to come.

Kim’s makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic gifted KK with a lemon, a Judith Leiber clutch worth $4,195 (P213,945 before tariff and markup). The quarter lemon is encrusted with clear and yellow crystals.

The hot dog came from KK’s publicist Tracy Romulus. The hot dog is an expensive piece of accent at $5,995 (P305,745). “It is a beauty made with Austrian crystals for mustard, relish and trimmings. It looks nice paired with snappy suits. It can hold an iPhone, a wallet and lipstick,” said Krystalle.

Larsa Pippen, the BFF of KK and the ex-wife of NBA’s Scottie Pippen, could not be outdone. She gave a diamond chain (price not mentioned).

Kim strutted off a new Givency bag worth $2,290 (P116,790) presumably from still-aspouse Kanye West. Rumor has it that Kanye gave KK a piece of paper: a $1million donation to her favorite charities. This last one belongs to “Enlightened,” though.
