THE Ateneo de Manila University (Admu) Blue Eagles, University Athletic Association of the Philippines (Uaap) season 81 women's volleyball champion, lived up to its billing having swept Davao Optima in three straight sets, 25-10 25-19 25-19, during their Volleyball for a Cause exhibition match at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Petro Gazz Arena Sunday.

Team captain Pauline Marie Monique Gaston, Vanessa Gandler, Faith Janine Shirley Nisperos, Danielle Theris Ravena, Janel Maraquinot, Joan Decemary Narit, Erika Gabrielle Coloso Julianne Marie Samonte and Kiara Cyrene Cruz were among those who wowed the crowd with their sizzling spikes, solid blocks and tricky placing.

Davao Optima players struggled as if they could not get their acts together with a series of miscues and errors even at the start of the first set.

In the second set though, Davao Optima put up a gallant fight after trailing 2-12 but still failed to keep the momentum.

But Davao Optima players left quite an impression in the third set having challenged the Uaap champions with powerspikes and service aces of their own as both teams figured in a series of deadlocks and lead changes.

Davao Optima's Venus Flores, in a Facebook interview with Sun.Star Davao yesterday, said, "Very nice experience since isa sa mga premier na school when it comes sa volleyball sa Manila and Admu na Uaap champions. Sayang lang jud wala mi ka set bisan isa (It's a very nice experience to play against Uaap champions from a premier school in volleyball in Manila)."

Her teammate Mitch Agton, for her part, said, "Grateful for the experience. I enjoyed playing with them. Admu players are strong and well versed. Maski pa friendly game lang, gihatag ghpon namo among best ug gusto gihapon mi modaug (Even though it was just a friendly game, we still gave our best and we also wanted to win)."

The charity game was organized by Blue Athletics in cooperation with Ateneo de Davao University athletics.

Blue Eagles fans from as far as South Cotabato and General Santos City reportedly watched the event.
