THE Cebu City Government has reactivated its spaghetti wires eradication program to remove dangling cables that pose hazards in Cebu City streets.

Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairman of the City Council committee on infrastructure, was tasked by Mayor Edgardo Labella to talk to the different utility firms to ensure that this perennial problem is solved.

Guardo said that the Visayan Electric Company (Veco), Globe, Smart, Sun, PLDT, Skycable and Cebu Catholic Television Network have started to send out linemen to fix low-lying wires belonging to the various utilities.

“I see this as a very good program. That is why I reactivated it to clean up the messy wires and our surroundings,” Guardo said in Cebuano.

This week, linemen from the different utility firms will focus on untangling spaghetti wires along Archbishop Reyes Avenue near the Cebu Grand Convention Center.

Once they are done removing dangling wires in the area, the linemen will then proceed to Escario Street.

Guardo told SunStar Cebu that for the safety of motorists, the utilities were asked to raise the wires’ height from the existing 16 feet to 18 feet so that even if the cables eventually sag, the risk of them falling on vehicles and pedestrians will be reduced.

He plans to introduce an ordinance in the City Council requiring all utility firms to adhere to a minimum height of 18 feet for all their wires.

The chairman of the City’s infrastructure committee warned that if dangling wires are not removed from the streets, these may cause more vehicular accidents, damage to property and worse, even the loss of lives. (From PAC of SuperBalita Cebu)
