Tan: The anatomy of an affair (Proverbs 7)

Straight from the Heart

CHAPTER 7 is a chapter regarding adultery. If there's anyone who doesn't want to talk about this subject, it's the writer of Proverbs. Many ugly scenes and scents of compromise are brought back yet the writer devoted a whole lot of space about this ugly chapter of his life. Chapter 6 talked about the severe, painful, inevitable and unending consequences of adultery. Chapter 7 is an autopsy of adultery, an analysis of what causes the death of a person.

Verses 1-5 begin with the abundance of instructions all over. Notice the verbs the writer highlighted: follow my advice, treasure my commands, guard my instructions, guard your eyes, tie them on your fingers as a reminder, write them deep within your heart.

The spiritual autopsy begins with the gruesome cut of looking at the past. The writer shows it all began with undetected and then tolerated indecent allurements of an affair (6-9). It highlights the ignorance of the youth mixed with the foolishness of the heart as a prefect target for an affair. The cut goes deeper as the autopsy report reveals that after the indecent allurements of an affair comes the almost inescapable trap of entertaining intimate attraction.

Verses 9-15 gives us details of this phase of an affair. Remember the 3 A's that describe this fatal attraction 1. Appetite, meaning even before the temptation presented itself there was a lurking desire to enjoy the forbidden. 2. Availability, no boundaries, no restraints, and no one cares who gets hurt. 3. Access, the unaccounted privacy grants access to compromise, you know the place and you have the password. We need the fear of the Lord to sanctify our appetites, to detour from places and people where baits are available. We need God's grace and the support of Godly friends, and daily doses of spiritual boosters so we will not take the bite!

When wild imaginations become harmful actualizations, then comes the gruesome part of the autopsy, the illicit adventure of an affair (16-21). Here is what truly happens inside illicit affairs.

* Engagement of sinful pleasures (16-18) (an addiction is entertained)

* Entrance to a treacherous opportunity (19-20) (a foolish assumption is believed)

* Enjoying the seductive language of an affair (21) (a forbidden admiration is enjoyed)

In verses 22-23, after the illicit adventure comes the deadly instant attack caused by an affair. The fall is instantaneous but the erosion started a long time ago. The writer ends the chapter, closes the gruesome cuts from the autopsy, calmly and wisely gives timely insights from the autopsy report of an affair (25-27).

* Don't underestimate your weakness.

* Don't get over confident with your strength.

* Don't entertain thoughts of exemption from temptation.

* Don't let your heart stray.

* Don't wander from this path.
