Lanzones Festival boosts Camiguin economy, says DOT

DEPARTMENT of Tourism (DOT)-Northern Mindanao Director Marie Elaine Uchuan said the recent celebration of Lanzones Festival has created a huge impact on the economy of Camiguin.

Unchuan said more tourists, both local and foreign, are visiting Camiguin to the point that almost all hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops are full.

"It has really changed yung economic status dahil yung businesses talaga makikita mo na dati kasi medyo kunti pa yung pumupunta pero ngaun when its the festival na puno yung mga kwarto, puno yung mga restaurants, puno yung mga stores na nagbebenta ng souvenirs, malaki talagang economic impact yun dun sa mga buhay ng ating mga taga Camiguin," Unchuan said.

She added that there is also a lack of accommodation establishments on the island during this time due to the influx of tourists.

She hoped that more accommodation facilities would be constructed on the island.

The local government unit is also looking at measures to maintain the sustainable tourism on the island. A study to determine the island's carrying capacity is being undertaken.

"Tayo naman sa region, we do encourage tourism but yun nga we push it on sustainable tourism para hindi masira yung ating isla at ma preserve ang ganda ng paligid especially because meron tayong Asean heritage park dito which is Mt. Hibok-Hibok-Timpoong inaayos naman natin na hindi maging over crowded at hindi magkaron ng over tourism," Unchuan said.

Apart from the Lanzones Festival, another tourist attraction in Camiguin is the Panaad during Holy Week wherein pilgrims from all over the country arrive on the island for the Station of the Cross.
