THE Police Regional Office in Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) goes on full alert as some 8,000 policemen are deployed across the region to secure the observance of All Saints' and All Souls' Days.

Before he left his post on Thursday, October 31, former PRO-10 chief Brigadier General Rafael Santiago Jr. ordered the establishment of police assistance desks in strategic key areas to ensure the safety and security of the public.

The 8,000 police officers will secure 232 cemeteries in Northern Mindanao, as well as churches, transport terminals, public plazas, malls, beach resorts, and other places of convergence.

Lt. Col. Mardy Hortillosa, PRO-10 spokesperson, said all police personnel are not allowed to take a leave of absence, except for sick leave and emergency leave.

"But as much as possible, duty tanan para maka-render ug duty tanan para magbantay," he said.

Hortillosa said PRO-10 has also ordered police units to closely coordinate with the local government units and partner agencies to maximize manpower and resources.

Also, road safety marshals will be designated along the roads to and from the cemeteries. Volunteer groups are also welcome to help manage the crowds and prevent traffic jams along major thoroughfares.

"There are very active government agencies like DPWH, LTO, DOTC, RTA, and volunteer groups who have been our constant partners. I have directed our unit commanders to collaborate with them to beef up our security and ensure that public roads are safe," he said.

Hortillosa, meanwhile, reminds the public traveling away from their homes to secure their houses, unplug electrical appliances and make sure all points of entry are locked.

Motorists traveling to the provinces are also reminded to check the condition of their vehicles through this checklist: BLOWBAGETS (battery, light, oil, water, brakes, air, gas, engine, tie and self).

Police will also undertake security patrols in residential areas to prevent break-ins and "akyat-bahay" incidents.

"We therefore call on the public to stay vigilant, safe, and prepared at all times. While you are out visiting your departed loved ones, ensure you leave your homes secured, or at least leave someone to watch over it," the official said.
