Tell it to SunStar: Release all political prisoners now

WE Judge Cecilyn Burgos-Villavert of Branch 89 of the Regional Trial Court in Quezon City, known for using her position to foment injustice, instead of dispensing justice, issued the search warrant that police operatives used in the raids of offices of human rights and people’s organizations in Bacolod City and homes of activists in Bacolod and Manila and to the arrest of many activists, according to reports.

Allegedly, the use of search warrants has made offices and individuals vulnerable to the planting of evidence, which eventually lead to trump-up charges, such as illegal possession of firearms or explosives and red-tagging of legal organizations.

We denounce State terrorism under Duterte’s Memorandum Order 32,which has basically ordered the Philippine National Police and the Department of Justice along with the Armed Forces of the Philippines to intensify their intelligence operations, investigation and persecution against individuals or groups, which they perceive as conspiring to commit acts of lawless violence in the country.

The Duterte government and his cohorts are accountable to the families and relatives of those in jail.

In fact, these acts of tyranny have spread outside the country when government operatives under the National Task Force attacked progressive organizations in Hong Kong by distributing smear campaign materials and destroying the decades-long work of protecting the rights and welfare of our organization.

We join the call to stop the attacks on all organizations and individuals who truly serve the people. We should carry on providing the social services that this government fails to deliver.
