Mendoza: Tremors are our test of faith

Mendoza: Tremors are our test of faith

RECENTLY, certain parts of Mindanao particularly Cotabato and Davao del Sur Provinces were hit by strong magnitude earthquakes that claimed lives, destroyed properties and left many homeless.

Quarterly, a national earthquake drill is being performed in the schools and offices. Symposia, trainings and other fora are periodically conducted to follow up what were discussed or practiced during those information dissemination campaigns to abate further harm and threat to life when experiencing earthquake.

Those drills were put to test during the three strong tremors that hit the same places only for the month of October, not to include the numerous aftershocks that brought people to tremble with fear and anxiety especially those whose places were hardly hit by the shaking. As mentioned, the phenomenon did not only destroy properties and caused lands to erode but also claimed lives with various causes.

For some, the frequent occurrences are difficult to bear but many chose to be strong for the sake of their children and the elderly who are the one susceptible to be fatalities or injured because of their limited movements and less strength to go to safety places

Disaster occurrence and safety experts prescribe “duck, cover and hold” during earthquake. Duck down to the floor, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops. They are also warned to avoid danger spots near windows, hanging objects, mirrors, or tall furniture. The authorities further said that if you take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, hold on to it and be prepared to move with it.

They also advise people to refrain from running outside. According to https://www.livescience.com › 33556-earthquake-safety-tips, trying to run in an earthquake is dangerous, as the ground is moving and you can easily fall or be injured by debris or glass. Running outside is especially dangerous, as glass, bricks, or other building components may be falling. Again, you are much safer to stay inside and get under a table.

Actually, it is not the earthquake itself that caused people to panic but it is the irresponsible spreading of fake news, rehash news items, supposed to be warnings from government agencies sent through text messages, messengers and other social media platforms about more tremors and stronger than the previous once, occurrence of tsunamis and the likes and other critics of the people in power whose main purpose it to always find fault and discredit the good deeds the present government are doing just to pursue their evil plans of overthrowing this administration.

Is it not a proper way to pray for each other and wish other well despite the calamities we are currently experiencing and just channel our energies in mobilizing our followers to help those who in dire need of help. In that way, you can redeem yourself from ridicule of people that again you are using the tragedies to get even to the ones managing the affairs of the state. At this trying times that we need to support each other, not to destroy each other. Enough of our own agenda but what should be ruling us are the agenda of our people of a sustainable life ahead.

Let us pray to be strong and resilient, sturdy and pliant despite all the test of our existence and of our faith for at the end of the day, it is God who will give us what is best for us.

This Corner hopes that it will not take us forever to read the signs of times.
