STUDENTS of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) in Talisay City have signed the petition calling to demolish illegal structures at the Northern Negros Natural Park (NNNP).

They also expressed opposition to the pronouncement on legalizing these structures at the natural park.

The petition signing held recently at the said campus was led by Supreme Student Government president Christian Montoro and other heads of various clubs and organizations as well as school staff along with environment group Group of Environmental Socialists (Goes).

The activity was in line with the celebration of Sustainable Development Goals Month.

Goes, in a statement said, it was awed by the response of the school for gathering over 800 signatures from the students and staffs just within four hours after the petition was announced and opened for signing.

The group said the campaign triggered and awakened the environmental side of the petitioners.

"Several comments and questions were raised as they sensed real threat on the move of the government to legalize the illegal structures inside the natural park," it added.

Among these questions are "paano ang illegal maging legal, ano klase sang pang gobyerno ina, tungod manggaranon ang ga-violate i-legalize nalang [how will illegal becomes legal, what kind of governance is that, because violators are rich it will just be legalized]?"

Also, the students have recognized the need for everyone to unite in this petition for their younger siblings -- the future generations -- who will suffer from effects of climate change caused by environmental degradation.

Campaign advocates assured the petitioners that their voice will be well represented and heard.

Randy James Rojo, convenor of Goes, said the campaign will continue to gather more signatures from three other CHMSC campuses in the province.

Rojo said all petition signatures of students and staff of CHMSC - Talisay Campus together with all pertinent documents supporting the call to stop the legalization of Illegal structures at the NNNP will be submitted to all concerned government agencies.

"No to legalization of illegal structures. Instead, demolish illegal structures to save NNNP," he added.
