Limlingan: Generally peaceful

FRIDAY'S celebration of All Saints' Day or "Undas" was generally peaceful, so declared by the Philippine National Police Regional Office III.

This means, there were no killings, major robberies, accidents, riots or other serious crimes except for petty infractions.

However, the police reported that in some cemeteries, there were confiscations of bladed weapons, alcoholic beverages and playing cards.

This means that people trooping cemeteries and memorials parks are still stubborn to bring such despite the fact that it is almost a public knowledge that these are prohibited in such places and during such occasion.

Some people really tend to disobey and defy rules and regulations and continue doing what they want, whatever and whenever.

For decades, such is always the case. Some folks always think of the Undas as a celebration for the living and not for the departed. Others know the occasion and the activities it entails and they are just too hard-headed and break the rules.

During Undas, just like other crowd-drawing, crowd-gathering occasions, we cannot do away with the mushrooming of enterprising Filipinos who are particularly called "vendors."

These people can sell almost everything especially those items that are "in" for the occasion and those they foresee to sell like hotcakes.

These micro-entrepreneurs simply know what people might need for the activities.

Since there are many vendors and many things sold during Undas, there are also many problems cropping up like the heaps and heaps of trash that many indiscriminately throw or dispose at their pleasure.

Plastic bottles, tetra pack containers, plastic bags and many more littered even graveyards and atop niches.

There are flowers offered and must have withered by this time that were also left behind that add up to the garbage generated by Undas.

Although these flowers are organic and are biodegradable, some of their containers such as flower vases and styrofoams, are not.

As per my personal observation, the celebration of the Undas was made more convenient because of dark skies. Although ocassional drizzles were experienced, the heat and humidity was alleviated by a little rain in some parts of Pampanga.

Undas 2019 is generally peaceful.

While we remember the dead, the people in many parts of Mindanao are shaking in fear because of the number of earthquakes that were experienced.

There are a number of casualties and there are more than structures that were damaged since the October 16 earthquake that struck and followed by major tremors and many aftershocks even up to this date.

While there are many speculations including that there will be a "big one" in Mindanao, the total damage of the series of earthquakes is immeasurable.

People were traumatized and are now seeking help as they have no more homes to stay.

The magnitude of the earthquakes were recorded to as high as those major earthquakes in the country.

What caused further damage on the other hand is the fact that these phenomena were made into series and in almost the same locations.

The Mindanao earthquakes are another wake-up calls for all of us in terms of readiness in case of a bigger one.

Also, we have to ask ourselves if we are ready enough to mitigate the effects in case one after another happens.
