Jealous man holds common-law wife hostage

A 31-YEAR-OLD man was arrested after he held hostage his common-law wife in Tumaga Village, Zamboanga City, the police said Monday, November 4.

Police Captain Edwin Duco, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) information officer, identified the arrested suspect as Gerald Tubilla, 31, who allegedly held hostage his common-law wife, Raquel Delos Reyes, 33, around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in their residence at Sitio Sierra Madre in Tumaga Village.

Duco said investigation showed the incident was preceded by a domestic violence that prompted Rogelio Tubilla, 56, the father of the suspect, to seek the assistance of the police.

He said the responding policemen negotiated with the younger Tubilla to release Delos Reyes and to come out to settle their problem.

However, the suspect refused which prompted the relatives of Delos Reyes to ask the policemen to allow them and the common-law wife to settle the marital problem.

Duco said all efforts proved futile as Tubilla refused to release Delos Reyes instead grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened to stab her.

He said the situation prompted responding policemen to act appropriately that resulted to the safe rescue of Delos Reyes and the arrest of Tubilla.

He added that Tubilla got jealous when he saw Delos Reyes sending text messages to an acquaintance. (SunStar Zamboanga)
