Total ban on pork from ASF-affected sites looms

THE Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, through the Provincial Task Force on African Swine Flu (ASF), is mulling for a total ban on pork products coming from Luzon and other ASF-positive areas.

Dr. Renante Decena, Provincial Veterinary head, said the proposal was made as other provinces in the country have adopted similar moves in a bid to prevent the entry of the virus in their areas.

“This is to maintain our province free from ASF especially that we have a surplus of pork supply,” Decena said.

Among the areas proposing a total ban include Bohol, Cebu, Panay and some areas in Mindanao.

Decena said if the ban was put in place, live hogs and other pork-related products from areas and other countries identified by the Department of Agriculture (DA) to be affected by ASF cannot enter the province.

The provincial official also stated that the temporary ban will last until December 18, although they are expecting a new ordinance, which could further extend the ban.

With the Christmas holidays just a few weeks away, local pork producers assured that there is enough supply of pork to meet the demand until the end of the year.

Decena also emphasized that the task force did not let up in its monitoring against the entry of pork products at entry points all over the province.
