TROOPS have overrun what they claimed to be the last major lair of the New People's Army (NPA) in Misamis Oriental and recovered high-powered guns and bullets last October.
The 58th Infantry Battalion (58IB) raided the NPA lair in Minalwang, Claveria in Misamis Oriental, with an area of about 250x250 square meters and can accommodate around 100 people.
Seized were high-powered firearms, including an M16, ammunition for M16 and AK47, bomb components, subversive documents and personal belongings.
The military said the lair was believed to have been abandoned just days ago.
"Fifty years of armed struggle have not solved any of our problems. It has caused more problems for our society. Five decades of armed struggle have brought senseless deaths and miseries to hundreds of thousands of Filipinos and destroyed the future of the youths," 58IB commander Lieutenant Colonel Roy Anthony Derilo said.
"We are appealing to those brothers and sisters who lose track to give peace a chance. We will ensure your safety and well-being when you lay down your arms and live peacefully with your families. The Army will not hesitate and is always ready to use its force against threat groups who will continue to spoil peace," he added.
Meanwhile, Army soldiers over the weekend rescued an alleged wounded rebel during its combat operation in San Isidro, Santiago, Agusan del Norte.
Major Reggie Go, 4th Infantry Division (4ID) spokesperson, said an encounter between troops of the 29th Infantry Battalion and the NPA resulted in the death of an NPA rebel and the wounding of another.
The wounded NPA was found by soldiers in a forested area of the same town. He was given first aid for a gunshot wound in his right leg.
He is now in stable condition.
Meanwhile, 4ID commander Major General Nemesio Gacal said the rescue signifies the army's adherence to International Humanitarian Law.
"I commend the brave and professional troops of the 29IB for saving the life of the wounded NPA, for we believe that life is precious and everyone deserves a second chance to live peacefully," Gacal said.
