Negros Occidental governor leads milk feeding program

ALMOST 300 residents of Moises Padilla gathered in a covered court of Barangay 1 as Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson led the official launching of the milk feeding program Wednesday, November 6, 2019.

Together with the governor were Provincial Council Committee on Agriculture member Agustin Bascon, Moises Padilla Mayor Ella Celestina Garcia-Yulo, Moises Padilla Vice Mayor Adrian Villaflor, and Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena, as well as other local officials.

In his speech, the governor congratulated Moises Padilla because of the town's recent hosting of various events, which means that the town is already peaceful and that it is already open to visitors.

The governor also informed the public that the milk for the feeding program is sourced locally and that the province is ready to help any local government unit (LGU) if they would request for it as what Mayor Garcia-Yulo did.

The milk feeding in Moises Padilla began last October where the town receives approximately 100 liters of milk per week from the Provincial Government to be given to children who are malnourished.

The town ranked first in the entire province for having severely wasted children, second for underweight children and third for stunted children in the 2018 Operation Timbang Plus report of the National Nutrition Council.

The governor also vowed to have the roads cemented in Moises Padilla as this is what he conveyed to Mayor Garcia-Yulo when the mayor also asked him for help regarding the town's road problems.

In her speech, the mayor said the local government currently has a feeding program wherein they give one meal a day for five days in a week to children, but instead gives this meal to mothers if the child is still between zero to six months as they are still breastfeeding.

She also said that she is giving the village chiefs the responsibility to monitor the feeding programs in their barangays.

As per Dr. Decena, nutrition is really important to children from zero to seven years old.

He said the province has two farms, one in Murcia and one in La Granja wherein the former is sourced for meat while the latter is sourced for milk where the cows produce six to 10 liters of milk every day.

The highlight of the event was the milk toasting where various children and mothers joined in drinking the milk from the province.

The Provincial Government also donated vitamins to the local government unit on the same occasion. (PR)
