Duterte approves new teaching ranks, education reforms

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has approved the Department of Education’s (DepEd) recommendations to improve the quality of education in the country, Malacañang said on Thursday, November 7.

Duterte gave his approval during the 43rd Cabinet meeting at Malacañan Palace in Manila on Wednesday night, November 6, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

This comes after Education Secretary Leonor Briones stressed the need for reforms, even though her agency was able to address access to education when it provided free education to 27.2 million learners.

“Moving forward, quality basic education is imperative. Thus, the President approved DepEd’s recommendation[s]” Panelo said.

Among the approved proposals from the DepEd were to improve curriculum for students who want to pursue education, create more plantilla positions for teachers, craft a communication plan on quality education, and harness the use of technology.

Panelo said the suggestions would help “educate more students, educators and leaders.” (NASE/SunStar Philippines)
