6 battle for honor in Cebu Rugby 10s

SOME of the best rugby clubs in the country converge this weekend in Cebu City’s annual rugby meet - Cebu 10s Rugby Festival.

A total of six teams, that include some Philippine Volcano players, will be competing for the prestigious Cup title on Nov. 9, 2019 at the Cebu International School (CIS) grounds.

Host and last year’s runners-up Cebu Dragons, SKF Mavericks, Lapu-Lapu Jets and 301 King comprise Pool A. Last year’s Head champion Manila Nomads, Komodos, Clark Jets and All Stars Hunters are in Pool B. Although the Luzon teams always come here to compete in the highest level, one of the teams that are expected to shine are the Komodos.

“Also known as the Komodo Dragons, this team used to be the rookie team of the Cebu Dragons. This year, it is composed of veteran players who returned to playing for this tournament. This is led by team captain Lester Loma. Some players also played for the National Team during their time,” one of the organizers Maggie Royo told SunStar Cebu.

The Cebu Dragons came up short last year after losing to heavily-favored Eagles Rugby Football Club, 22-10, in the Cup finals in 2018.

Meanwhile, the products of the grassroots program called, “Rugby - A Sport For All” will be competing in a tournament on the same day.

A total of 16 school-based teams will be competing in four divisions - Elementary Boys, Elementary Girls, High School Boys and High School Girls.

“With this model of opportunity for schools to inspire students that will play rugby as a sport, the Cebu Dragons are building pathways from these schools to the only local based club in Cebu. Our aim is to establish progressive platforms to support all students in study, sports and life’s values, and what will help us get there will be a local domestic season, regular competition, provincial representation and eventually national representation,” said Philip Campbell, the NZAID Cebu Project Head.
