Tell it to SunStar: Quake-stricken LGUs in Mindanao to get P10M from PCSO

THE Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) extends assistance to local government units (LGUs) and families affected by the series of earthquakes that struck Mindanao on Oct. 16, 29 and 31, 2019, particularly in the various cities and municipalities of Cotabato and Davao del Sur. Through the PCSO’s Calamity Assistance Program of the Charity Assistance Department, the agency aims to augment the resources of the LGUs to provide financial assistance to individuals and families affected by natural and man-made calamities.

“Our branch offices in Mindanao were in close coordination with the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council for the assistance that we will provide today to the affected areas. PCSO’s mandate is to provide funds for medical assistance and charitable services,” PCSO General Manager Royina Garma said.

PCSO’s assistance may be utilized for food/feeding projects for displaced families in evacuation centers/temporary shelters and for the procurement of medicines/medical supplies necessary for the conduct of health-related activities for disease prevention and treatment among the affected population, including water and hygiene/sanitation requirements.

The PCSO extends financial assistance in the total amount of P10 million to the provinces of Cotabato and Davao del Sur to cover the needs of affected individuals and families in Kidapawan City (P1 million), Magpet (P1 million), Makilala (P3 million), Tulunan (P1 million), Digos (P1 million), Bansalan (P1 million), Magsaysay (P1 million) and Matanao (P1 million). The identified areas may also utilize PCSO’s assistance to purchase provision for shelter (tents) on top of the usual items such as medicines, bottled water, food and sanitation/hygiene kits.

“On top of the P10 million assistance given to the eight cities and municipalities in Mindanao, P100,000 worth of medicines are also given to the municipalities of Makilala and Magsaysay through our Medicine Donation Program. In addition, PCSO may provide financial assistance to individuals affected by calamities/disasters under our existing Individual Medical Assistance Program or IMAP. PCSO, being a GOCC (government-owned and -controlled corporation) directly under the Office of the President, is here to serve the public all over the country, especially in times of disasters,” Garma added.

These various charitable programs of PCSO seek to mitigate the sufferings of our fellow Filipinos in Mindanao as they recover from the devastation brought about by the recent earthquakes.
