Suspect killed after ‘grabbing’ cop’s gun

THE suspect in the killing of a woman and her daughter was gunned down inside the police station after he allegedly tried to grab the issued firearm of a policeman while his fingerprints were being taken.

Renuel Wabinga Habillo alias Lotlot, 32, farmer, and resident of Purok New Waterfall, Barangay Megkawayan, Calinan District, Davao City, surrendered to authorities on November 7.

He was facing two counts of murder for killing Evelyn Saganay Lapera, 40, and her 11-year-old daughter, both residents of Calinan.

The victims sustained deep lacerated wounds in their napes and heads. Based on police investigation, the victims were found bathed in their own blood at 12:45 a.m. of November 7.

The suspect admitted to the crime and said he only did it because of extreme jealousy after he saw his alleged girlfriend with another man.

He said they had a heated argument hours before he hacked the victims to death.

Habillo voluntarily surrendered to Kagawad Rolando Escobar at the latter’s residence in Bagong Silang, Barangay Megcawayan, Calinan District, Davao City after the incident around 12 p.m. Thursday, November 7.

Calinan police station commander Police Major Archimedes Wesley said on Saturday morning, the suspect was taken out his cell for the processing of his fingerprints.

He allegedly attempted to grab the firearm of the policeman who was supposed to assist him. This led to a violent scuffle.

After seeing the commotion, he said other policemen who were present inside intervened to control the suspect and shot him twice. The suspect died from two gunshot wounds on his head and chest.

Amid questions on the incident especially the family of the suspect, Wesley said he welcomes any investigation, which he said is standard police procedure whenever there is a shooting incident inside a police station.
