AN IMPOSING icon of the Divine Mercy is set to welcome pilgrims and visitors from all over the world who plan to visit Cebu in time for the 500th year of Christianity in the country in 2021.

A lay foundation, the Shrine of the Divine Mercy de Cebu Foundation Inc. (SDMCF), plans to construct a Divine Mercy icon on top of a mountain in Barangay Garing, Consolacion in northern Cebu. The icon will rise some 800 feet above sea level.

It is envisioned to face east, overlooking the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the Cebu International Seaport.

Imma Alfon, foundation president, said this is just one of the two projects the Archdiocese of Cebu aims to accomplish for the celebration of the country’s quincentennial celebration in 2021.

Alfon said Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma revealed his support for the twin projects in his homily at the San Narciso parish in Consolacion last Oct. 29, 2019 during the town fiesta.

The archdiocesan shrine of the Divine Mercy in Garing will sit on a six hectare lot donated by the family of former Consolacion mayor Avelino Gungob, Sr.

The second project, she said, will be a giant image of Our Lady of Fatima to be built in the northern town of San Remigio.

The SDMCF has tapped the services of urban planner and architect Felino “Jun” Palafox to help with the development of the site that covers approximately 27 hectares. (WBS/ PR)
