DTI to conduct sustainable biz seminar

AS GLOBAL economies strive to decrease their carbon footprint to address climate change, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 7 will conduct a seminar on environmentally sustainable business practices.

According to DTI-Cebu Director Esperanza Melgar this is part of the series of activities in commemoration of the sixth Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) anniversary in the country.

“Invited speakers are leading advocates and practitioners on sustainable development and members of Cebu’s business community who will share their sustainable business practices,” she said in a statement.

The Yolanda Inter-Agency Task Force headed by Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles is currently mounting a month-long series of events in Tacloban, Samar, Cebu, Panay Island and Palawan.

The seminar targets 120 participants from the National Government led by Nograles, local chief executives or representatives from Yolanda-affected areas, micro, small and medium enterprises, non-government offices, cooperatives, academe and the public.

It carries the theme: “Transforming Business for an Environmentally Sustainable Future,” in cooperation with the Cebu Technological University.

The event is slated on Nov. 14, 2019, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cebu Parklane International Hotel.

Super Typhoon Yolanda was one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. It is the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record killing at least 6,300 people in November 2013. The typhoon caused catastrophic destruction in the Visayas, particularly in Samar and Leyte. According to the United Nations officials, about 11 million people were affected and many were left homeless.

The DTI has been helping Yolanda-striken communities in the province of Cebu get back up in terms of business opportunities. During the Sinulog Fiesta Fair 2019, local traders in northern Cebu like Bogo, Bantayan, Medellin, San Francisco, San Remigio, Santa Fe, Tabogon, Tabuelan and Tuburan were given the opportunity to showcase their products and gain market access.

The event, which was held in SM City Cebu, hit sales amounting to P10.29 million, surpassing the P3 million target. (JOB)
