Mandaue public schools suspend classes for 3 days

ALL public elementary and secondary schools in Mandaue City will suspend classes on Nov. 27 to 29, 2019 as the City hosts the Regional Schools Press Conference.

Mercedita Demoral, education supervisor for English of the Department of Education (DepEd) 7 and head organizer of the event, said there are over 6,000 students from all over Central Visayas who will compete.

Classes in Mandaue’s public schools will be suspended since some of the schools will be used as sleeping quarters of the participants and the personnel of other schools will help organize the activities.

As approved by DepEd, the Mandaue City Schools Division will hold classes on Saturdays to replace the school days the students miss.

The Regional Schools Press Conference is an annual contest in news writing, photojournalism, editorial writing and editorial cartooning in English and Filipino.

The opening program will be at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex. The competition proper will be held at the Mandaue City Central School for the elementary edition while the high school edition of the competition will be held at the Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School.

It has been a decade since Mandaue City last hosted the event.

Last year, Mandaue’s representatives in the competition won third place.

“By joining the press conference, the participants are guided... if their forte is writing, they will pursue a career in Journalism. Some of our judges are products of this event and are now working in the local media,” said Demoral. (KFD)
