THE Cebu City Government has no reason not to collect all the garbage in urban barangays.

This was the statement of Mayor Edgardo Labella after the City received 21 compactor trucks on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019. These were purchased during the time of his predecessor, former mayor Tomas Osmeña, to strengthen the City’s existing fleet of 11 garbage trucks.

Labella said the City could now improve its garbage collection system with the presence of 32 trucks under the Department of Public Services (DPS).

In the first four months of Labella’s administration, the DPS personnel often collected around 500 tons of trash every day.

“I expect that our garbage collection will improve much better, more efficient and more effective,” Labella said.

DPS head Joel Biton welcomed the new trucks’ arrival, saying his personnel could use these in responding to places where there are uncollected garbage.

Labella has tasked City Attorney Rey Gealon and City Councilor Eduardo Rama to monitor the day-to-day operations of the garbage collectors. The mayor wants to make sure that the city is always clean.

Ending the contract with Jomara Konstruckt, which has been tapped to help the City in collecting garbage since July, is also a possibility, according to the mayor.

“We are seriously considering to stop this outsourcing (of service) and (just) use these 32 garbage trucks to collect the garbage in the city,” Labella said.

The City under Labella entered into a contract worth P25 million with Jomara Konstruckt. The contract will end in December.

The mayor said the service of the private hauler is no longer needed after the arrival of the new garbage trucks. (PAC, KAL)
