2 open dumpsites ordered closed

TWO open dumpsites in Pampanga were ordered closed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), on November 12, as the agency invoked provisions of the Ecological Waste Management Act.

Cease and desist orders were issued to the local government executives of Porac and Bacolor for the closure of the open dumpsites. The orders were signed by undersecretary for solid waste management and local government unit concerns Benny Antiporda.

Antiporda ordered the local officials of the said local government units to immediately stop operations of the open dumpsites and start immediate rehabilitation measures according to guidelines set in the safe closure and rehabilitation of open dumpsites.

Antiporda said the open dumpsites were strictly prohibited under Republic Act 9003 or the "Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000."

The local officials were also ordered to present their plan of rehabilitation to the office of Antiporda in Quezon City along with the permits, clearances and documents on the operation of the dumpsites.

Failure to abide by the order, Antiporda said the DENR would resolve the issue in accordance with their records and rules.

The orders were served by DENR-EMB personal on Tuesday, November 12, to Mayor Jaime Capil of Porac and Mayor Diman Datu of Bacolor.

EMB personnel also checked on the status of the open dumpsites.
