CORPUS Christi’s David Rey Ancheta and Lumbia School’s Santiago Lumancas IV showed their readiness for the coming regional meet in Lanao del Norte when they topped the Chessmoms Inter-School chess tournament held recently at Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.

Ancheta actually finished in a tie with Clyde Harris Saraus of Tagoloan Community College (TCC) at 6.5 points, but his victories against strong opponents in the early rounds eventually rewarded him with superior tiebreak points en route to bagging the P2,000 top purse.

The Jasaan native Saraus, who is also a regular Palaro campaigner, settled for the runner-up prize of P1,500 in mixed high school division for boys and girls.

“I think his triumphs over Mary Joy Tan and Alexis dela Rama nga mga regional Palaro qualifiers gihapon maoy nakapadako sa iyang Bucholz tiebreak points,” David’s ever supportive mother and coach Jeanny Ancheta told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

In the elementary’s Grade 4-6 level, Lumancas--who was among the Oro representatives in the last Batang Pinoy National Finals in Puerto Princesa, Palawan--bagged solo first prize worth P1,500 with his 6.5 points total in seven rounds.

Lumancas’ only draw came at the hands of tough girl rival Karylle Dalagan from the neighboring town of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

“Nalipay ko kay iyang napeldi ang uban nga players nga iyang ma-agbat puhon sa regional Palaro karong December in Tubod, Lanao del Norte. Padayon lang gihapon ang pagbansay-bansay,” said the elder Sonny Lumancas Sr., himself a PNP chess team member in the annually-held AFP Olympics.
