MSU-IIT student tops regional statistics quiz

A BS-STATISTICS student of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology bested other 14 provincial winners in the Northern Mindanao Regional Championship of the 25th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) held at New Dawn Hotel, Velez, Cagayan de Oro City on November 12.

Francis Ann Emmanuel Arcamo recorded a total score of 30 out of 40 points, gaining the top rank in the Regional Championship.

Arcamo received a cash prize of P15,000 and a PSQ-designed plaque.

His coach, Mr. Calixto Elnas Jr., was also given a cash prize of P7,500 and the school received a Certificate of Recognition.

Arcamo would be the region’s representative to the National Finals which will be held in Metro Manila on November 29.

He will be competing with the other 16 regional champions.

Completing the top three regional winners of Region X were Arjay Nambatac (2nd Place) and Lex Nelson Carpio (3rd Place), both from Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan and BS Chemical Engineering students.

All three regional winners and their coaches shared the cash pot of more than P50,000.

Other provincial winners who joined the contest were: Bea Cuidad of Bukidnon State University, Lord Gryandel Garcia of Central Mindanao University, Love Linmie Lucrida of Mountain View College, Jovie Ann Sagocsoc and Nikka Sol Lobido of the Camiguin Polytechnic State College, Lorene Joy Bagolbol of Fatima College, Ruben Hilaga Jr. of MSU-Maigo School of Arts and Trades, Johnny Donio of MSU-Lanao del Norte Agricultural College, Zc Clark Clarete of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines-Panaon Campus, Charlwin Hazel Loma and Shane Hope Saludsod of Stella Maris College, and Jesse Michael Lituañas of USTP Main Campus.

The PSQ is a nationwide search for young statistics whizzes which began in 1992.

This activity is being organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Philippine Statistical Association Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organization of professional statisticians from government and non-government agencies and the academe.

The PSQ is being conducted to assess the competency and skills of students in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum and to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics among the students. (PR)
