7 nabbed for illegal fishing

JOINT police and fishery officials seized a motorboat with seven people aboard for illegal fishing off Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay, an official said Friday, November 15.

Arrested were Saldy Gumansing, 46, the motorboat operator, and six crew members namely, Jaypee Saliras, 34; Jonathan Recate, 20; Reny Magdali, 23; Wilbert Dag-Uman, 29; Jay-Ar Gumansing, 18; and Editho Flores, 29.

Police Major Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said they were arrested around 2:40 p.m. Thursday in the seawater of Caliran, Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Galvez said the joint police and fishery officials were on seaborne patrol when they chanced upon the fishermen aboard a motorboat engaged in illegal fishing locallly known as “Tapsay.”

She said the arrested fishermen were taken to the Mabuhay police headquarters documentation and proper disposition. (SunStar Zamboanga)
