Kabayan’s ‘Kiling’ festival kicks-off

KABAYAN, Benguet -- Ibaloi and Kankana-ey Ethno Linguistic groups in Kabayan will celebrate anew its “Kiling” festival.

Kiling Festival honors the red-necked bird locally known as “killing” which produces loud chirping sounds as a signal to rice farmers to prepare for the next cropping.

As part of the celebration, dance presentations by imitating the movements and the sounds of the bird will be performed by participants during the main program on November 28.

Mayor Faustino Aquisan in a press conference in its kick off program on Friday said the festival coincides with the town’s 119th founding anniversary.

The 15-day event formally opens on November 15 with a press conference, thanksgiving service, launching of photography contest featuring Kabayans scenic landscape views and tourism products.

On the same day, each barangays also required to create a Christmas tree using recycled, indigenous and local materials and a market day for traders and suppliers.

Aside from the dance showdown on November 28, a parade to be participated by all stakeholders and Kabayan runway showcasing the evolution of ethnic attires will also be held.

A forum for all transport groups, youth day and a chance for elementary students to serve as officials for a day is also set on November 19.

Civil mass wedding will be slated on November 20 and a Community Health Team Day and conress for all pregnant women set on November 21. The town is set to participate to the upcoming Benguet 2019 Adivay festival on November 22-23.

Teachers Day will be on November 25 together with the municipal officials and employees’ night, run or walk for a cause, barangay congress, graduation of community based skills trainees and jobs fair.

Other events comprised of Planetarium, Seniors Day, Farmers’ Day.

Kabayan with 13 barangays is home to highest mountain in Northern Luzon, Mt. Pulag and century old mummies.
