Mandaue taps SK for sports program

MANDAUE City Sports Commission (MCSC) has tapped the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to conduct a basketball training camp for children who could compete in the Batang Pinoy.

MCSC has trained 50 kids aged 10 to 20 years old from each barangay. On Nov. 16, 2019, it conducted a camp in Barangays Mantuyong and Bakilid, extending its camp to 15 barangays.

Jun de la Paz, head of MCSC, said they coordinate with the SK officers in each barangay to conduct their search for potential players. The chosen players will join their basketball training every night at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

He added that this will be a great opportunity for the children to show off their talents in the national level and this will also be an opportunity for the children to be offered scholarship from big universities around the Philippines

He said they have former players who received scholarships in De La Salle at Bacolod and some universities in Manila.

Rhamz Tanudra, 15, from Barangay Mantuyong, told SunStar Cebu that he joined the training camp because he dreams of being a Philippine Baskeball Association player one day like June Mar Fajardo.

He got excited to join the training camp when his mother told him about it.

He said they play basketball in their neighborhood every day. Next year, De la Paz said these potential players will be chosen to compete in the Batang Pinoy and also in the Mayor’s Cup.

Aside from basketball, de la Paz also wants to hold a similar camp for wushu, dancesport, volleyball and tennis next year. (KFD)
