Water transport firm eyes Minglanilla-Cebu route

MCE Shipping Lines, the company behind MyBoat, is looking at opening a route in the town of Minglanilla to complement the emerging tourism developments and business activities in the municipality.

MCE Shipping Lines chief executive officer, Dr. Nelson Mejia said the proposal was raised during a meeting with the Minglanilla Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.

“There is traffic congestion in Minglanilla and it’s a challenge to businessmen. That’s why I proposed to them a solution, which is water transport,” he said.

Mejia urged the local government unit to allocate a berthing space for their vessel to dock.

Minglanilla is a first class municipality in the province of Cebu. It is home to more than 100,000 residents according to a 2015 census.

It has diverse housing developments, a reclamation project and is blessed with natural resources suitable for agriculture and tourism ventures.

Minglanilla is also the home of the theme park, Anjo World.

“If we can push through with this project, the theme park will be more accessible to a lot of tourists,” he said.

Cebu Provincial Board Member Glenn Anthony Soco earlier said that Minglanilla has so much potential to grow being the gateway to the southern part of the province.

He said that whatever growth that will be generated in the municipality will have spill-over effects to neighboring towns. Minglanilla is sandwiched between the cities of Naga and Talisay.

Importance of water vessels

Mejia reiterated the importance of a water transport facility to address the traffic concerns of the province vis-a-vis its booming economy.

He encouraged passengers to utilize the water transport for a stress-free mobility to and from Cebu’s capital.

MCE Shipping Lines is currently plying the Naga-Cebu route through M/V Nicole Express. It has an estimated travel time of one hour.

The water vessel targets workers, students, traders and tourists, who wish to explore the south of Cebu

Meanwhile, Mejia is also mulling to ask the Cebu City Government again for a berthing space near Malacañang sa Sugbo.

The company is poised to provide more vessels to cater to more passengers if the need arises, Mejia said, as he continues to look for towns and cities that are open to water transportation to help the public. (JOB)
