SEDC cleans waterways

EMPLOYEES of Solid Earth Development Corp. (SEDC) and its suppliers gathered 400 kilos of solid waste along a vital creek and the shorelines off the port it operates in San Fernando town, Cebu.

SEDC undertook the clean-up activity recently with its primary client, Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc. (TCPI), to support the Adopt-an-Estero Program of the Environment Management Bureau (EMB).

The documented partnership with EMB started on Aug. 14, 2018 and it will end on Aug. 14, 2020, according to Mitzie Almira I. Carin, SEDC division manager for human resources and administration.

With the help of the employees of service providers FA Manpower Corp., Triple 8 Resources Development Corp., and San Fernando Integrated Services and Equipment Corp., the volunteers gathered trash from a stretch of nearly 600 meters of waterways and shorelines. Workers of TCPI supplier SGT Logistica Y. Recurso Inc. also joined in the undertaking. They cleaned Luknay Creek in Barangay South Poblacion, which hosts the SEDC port and the TCPI cement manufacturing facility.

The 40 participants collected 50 sacks of litter, mostly plastic, that SEDC stored at its own materials recovery facility. When these trash would dry up, they would be fed into the TCPI kiln where these would be converted to an alternative combustible fuel.

Meanwhile, upon the invitation of the Mining and Geociences Bureau, SEDC sent three delegations this year to help clean Bulacao River in Cebu City, particularly the riverbank under the Candulawan footbridge.

SEDC supported the activity pursued under the Recognizing Institutions towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers for Life program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The company is committed to continually improve the Environmental Management System it had adopted and championed.
