Highway patrol cop runs over, kills Grade 5 student

AN 11-YEAR-OLD boy was killed after he was ran over by a highway patrol policeman in Gingoog City, Monday night, November 18.

Police identified the victim as Jay-R Tuto, a Grade 5 student, while the policeman was known as Staff Sergeant Jerry Gentillan, 44, resident of Bayabas, Cagayan de Oro City and presently assigned at Provincial Highway Patrol Team in Misamis Oriental.

Investigation showed that Gentillan was driving his issued motorcycle while traversing the national highway.

Upon reaching the St. Mary Academy and Lunao Elementary School, Gentillan said the victim suddenly crossed the street and was hit even when he tried to avoid the boy.

Gentillan rushed the victim to the hospital but died shortly due to the injuries he sustained.

Authorities impounded the suspect’s motorcycle.

Gingoog City police chief Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Phillip Pontillas said the Gentillan was released after a settlement was made with the victim’s family.

“Dili na mopasaka og kaso. I-release na ang police ug siya mag-shoulder sa tanan gasto,” Pontillas said.

(The family will not file a case. The policeman will be release and will shoulder the expenses)
