Legaspi: It has been 11 years

NOVEMBER 20, 2008, my late brother Bill went to my office at the university and he was looking for a priest to anoint our mother. He told me that our mom is already in a delirium. So, I immediately packed up and sought for a priest at the university, it was a good thing that Fray Excel Saycon, OAR was around. He gave the last sacraments to our mother. She expired at around 11 pm. As I recall it, it was already 11 years ago.

Our mother is the third of the six children of Carlos and Estelita Infante of La Carlota. She took up BS Biology at the University of Santo Thomas, Manila. After graduation, she taught at University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) for four years and transferred to La Carlota City College after her marriage to the late Capt. Eduardo Legaspi of Silay. Their union produced us three – Carlos William, Carlos Eduardo, and Carlos Raul Mario.

Mom lived her life well. After deciding to quit teaching and becoming a full-time mother to her three children, she enjoyed life to the fullest. She was also a religious and pious woman. She was an active member of the Legion of Mary, Mother Butler, Days with the Lord Movement and she hears Mass daily. She was a good teacher for us. When I was small, she took pains in teaching us the “Caton” (a booklet for proper pronunciation of the alphabets).

She also has Catechesis with us every Sunday over baked chicken. Good manners and right conduct were often discussed over dinner. When we were in college, the noon meetings on Sundays and dinner Talks were minimized until it was out of the schedule. Everyone was busy then and mom would have the consolation of thinking that she has inculcated in us the faith and the value.

She was not all that perfect, she also had imperfections. In the last years of her life, she was given to anger and whenever I talked with her, all I heard then were complaints about everything around her but never about herself. However, she never complained about how she felt inside.

In 1992, Mom suffered from a stroke but survived. She would often roam around using her “metal baston”. If she was feeling well she would attend prayer meetings and even the Curia of the Legion of Mary.

Our dad passed away ahead of her. He suffered multiple strokes and passed away in 2000. All the while after our dad’s death, mommy became strong and managed the household while the other properties were managed by the children.

So, on the eve of November 20, she was ready to face her Creator, having seen that all her children had grown up to what she dreamt them to be.

Eternal Rest grant unto her, O Lord and let Perpetual Light shine upon her, May she rest in peace, Amen.

St. Ezekiel Moreno, pray for us.
