Police: Kidnapping incident ‘staged’

POLICE belied the kidnapping story of a 17-year-old student who earlier claimed he was picked up by men in a van from his school in Maramag, Bukidnon to Cagayan de Oro City on November 14.

In a statement, Maramag town police said they later learned that it was the student’s plan to visit the city, according to a witness.

The witness, whom the police did not identify, confirmed that he was with the alleged “kidnapped victim” on the day of the incident.

“Gipakita sa witness sa amo ilang conversation through texts nga November 13 pa lang gusto na sa minor muadto sa Cagayan de Oro for 3-5 days kay naa daw siya’y problema (The witness showed their conversation through texts on November 13 that the minor wanted to go to Cagayan de Oro for 3-5 days because he has a problem),” Maramag Police Station commander Police Major Gil Agpaoa said.

The witness also showed police a receipt of the money he sent to the minor for his fare to Cagayan de Oro.

Agpaoa said the witness already executed an affidavit about the incident.

The town police chief also said the minor’s inconsistent statements led them to conduct a deeper investigation. He said the minor is refusing to talk to investigators as of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Agpaoa said they might take actions against the minor for causing public alarm.
