Elderly-only area in offing during novena

AUGUSTINIAN friars plan to allocate exclusive areas for elderly devotees who will attend the 2020 Sinulog novena.

Rev. Fr. Ric Anthony Reyes, OSA, head secretariat for Fiesta Señor 2020, said because of the number of people who will participate in the Sinulog novena, they may apportion an exclusive space for senior citizens.

“We are thinking that we’ll have a special place for them where they won’t have to deal with the crowd,” he said in a mix of Cebuano and English. “Maybe they will be relocated. This is yet not final, it will be revisited. But we will relocate them somewhere near, of course, the basilica. The Plaza Sugbo is okay because it’s not very crowded and it’s accessible.”

If the plan pushes through, they will install LED TVs and communion stations in the area, he said.

Mila Castillo, a 66-year-old Sto. Niño devotee, said she has no objection if the new setup will be implemented during next year’s Sinulog novena.

“At last, you can attend the mass. After all, it’s all about Senior Sto. Niño. It doesn’t matter where the mass will be held,” she said in Cebuano.

Susana Flores, a 60-year-old resident of Barangay Pasil, Cebu City, said the idea is fine with her as long as her companions and her children will be with her.

Reyes said Augustinian friars and the Cebu City Government are working together to encourage the faithful to attend the novena at the Plaza Sugbo.

“We have innovations, but I cannot yet reveal what these are because these are in the planning stage. We will add features so that the faithful can attend the novena,” he said in a mix of Cebuano and English.

He said they hope to finalize the plans before Dec. 12, 2019. (WBS)
